The Church at Laodicea • Devotion 1

“Amen”
James Mann

“And to the angel of the church in Laodicea write: ‘The words of the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the beginning of God’s creation.’” Revelation 3:14

One of the most interesting things to me, when it comes to God, is how many different but meaningful names we give Him. Oftentimes, we overlook these in our typical day-to-day reading of the Bible though. Here we are given the name of “Amen” for God. To make things more interesting, the term “amen” is something that we end our prayers with, but most of us are never taught what this really means.

The dictionary definition of amen is “so be it.” You might be wondering, “Why do we end our prayers like this then?” We are beyond blessed that we have a God who is faithful to us. When He says He is going to do something, we can already consider it as done. There is not a question or any sort of doubt that we, as believers, should have in His ability to accomplish all things. When we are ending our prayers by saying “amen,” we are giving our wants, our needs, our thanksgiving, and all other things to God knowing that He will do with it what is necessary and so we are able to say, “So be it.”

Now looking back at our passage, we are seeing God as that “Amen,” or as that assurance of Him being faithful. We know that the words that are to follow are going to carry weight because these are words coming from Him. I cannot begin to explain how grateful I am that we can have that faith in someone. He is the only One that this is the case. We live in a world where we are being told so many things by so many different people, that we do not know who to trust anymore. I reflect back to how I was raised and my dad always told me, “Believe nothing you hear and about a third of what you see.” It is so sad to me that we are having to raise the coming generations on that mindset. I would love to be able to tell my future children that they can fully rely upon and have faith in others. The truth is, that is not the case in a world clouded by sin. The only “Amen” and faithful person that will never lead us astray is God Himself.
