Bible Verse for the Bedroom
Pastor Ryan and Cathy Story
When talking about sex, there is a razor-thin line between crass and profitable. I pray throughout these devotions I have not landed on the crass and offended, but I also hope I have been able to speak the truth in the reality we live in. This is a disclaimer. My heart for this devotion is strictly profitable and meant for building up.
Hobby Lobby is an amazing place. One of my favorite items they have is the Scripture verse wall decor. I enjoy going to different people’s houses and seeing different Scripture wall decals. Depending on the verse, it can tell you a lot about the family. I have seen Ecclesiastes 4:12, Jeremiah 29:11, John 3:16, and Joshua 1:9. It is a blessing to see families rally behind Scripture as a household focus and a truth to be lived out.
I have met many people who have a Bible verse for their work ethic, workout routine, creative activities, raising their children, and even cooking. Many may not have a Bible verse for the bedroom. So often we do not like to put sex into our conversations when it comes to faithfully living out the Gospel. When the Word of God is not an authority in all areas of our lives, we tend to drift away from living how God intended. This is especially true with sex.
It is tragic when sex becomes detached from God. We live in a world where sex has become an individual pursuit and a personal idol. Seldom do we apply God’s Word to our sex life. The sin that rules every one of our hearts elevates our pursuits to be the center of the universe. For many married couples, sex has become more of a “me-focused” act rather than a means to display the service and other focused practices of Christ.
God designed sex to be a place where a husband and a wife can both humbly serve each other. Philippians 2:3-4 says, “Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.” 2 Corinthians 5:14-15 adds, “For the love of Christ controls us, because we have concluded this: that one has died for all, therefore all have died; and he died for all, that those who live might no longer live for themselves but for him who for their sake died and was raised.”
We cannot discontinue the Bible in our sex life. Sex was created for good, and yet sin has caused it to become a ruling and controlling aspect of our lives. When this happens, the sin in our hearts hurts people. If your sex life is more about you, your needs, and your satisfaction, you are not thinking about your mate, you very well are spiritually damaging them. Humble yourselves to the Word of God, look at your heart, and ask yourself, “Is the way that Jesus asks us to live being lived out on the marriage bed?”
