God’s Design in Marriage • Devotion 2

Worth the Wait
Pastor Ryan and Cathy Story

We live in a hurried society that wants things now. We live in a world where if we are going to order something online, we choose Prime so we can get it overnight. If we are in a grocery store, we will leave a lane to get into the lane that is seemingly moving faster. We get aggravated when our cell phones take longer than a second to load a website or an app. We lack the ability to delay any sense of gratification because, well, we are in a hurry and we want things now.

Song of Solomon chapter three is an amazing chapter to read for every single person regardless of age. The bride awakes in chapter three and realizes her beloved is nowhere to be found, so she searches for him. Song of Solomon 3:3-5 reads, “The watchmen found me as they went about in the city. ‘Have you seen him whom my soul loves?’ Scarcely had I passed them when I found him whom my soul loves. I held him, and would not let him go until I had brought him into my mother’s house, and into the chamber of her who conceived me. I adjure you, O daughters of Jerusalem, by the gazelles or the does of the field, that you not stir up or awaken love until it pleases.”

There is little question the bride desires to be with the bridegroom; yet, she is publicly searching for him. The bride has a deep sexual desire for the bridegroom. That desire is not sin, that desire does not make her a harlot, and that desire does not make her dirty. Sexual desire was given to us by God. (I will be writing more on this and the “Eden Hermeneutic” next week.) I love the last statement made in this section. Some believe this statement is Solomon entering the poem as a narrator, some believe it may be the bride groom, “That you not stir up or awaken love unit it pleases.”

We live in such a hurried society and “we want it now,” and because of that, we ruin what marriage is meant to be. Sex is meant to exist for God’s glory and ought to be done God’s way. We cheapen marriage because we have cheapened sex. We live in a world where “stirring up and awakening love” is viewed as self-discovery and healthy. God’s Word, not some shame-filled purity sermon, tells us to not stir up passion until it is ready to bloom. This is not to avoid unwanted pregnancies or sexually transmitted diseases. The reason every person should wait for the right person is because of the negative effects that premarital sex can have on your spiritual life. Our bodies were given to us by God as a gift. That gift ought to be taken care of so one day, we can give that gift to the one who “our soul loved.” You can argue all you want, but the inherent, error-free, preserved, powerful Bible shows us two young people who were absolutely in love with each other, who longed to be with each other physically. Yet, they did not stir up love until it was God’s time.
