Sex: The Word vs. the World • Devotion 2

“And God Saw it was Good”
Pastor Ryan and Cathy Story

I mentioned last week about the Eden Hermeneutic. Hermeneutics is the theory and methods of interpreting the Bible. Now, it is always important to understand that God’s Word (the Bible) is infallible and without error, not man’s interpretation. Hermeneutics is amazing to dive deep into if you are looking for more understanding, engagement, appreciation, and application of the Bible. Eden was paradise on Earth. Eden was the place where God placed man, beast, nature, and eventually woman. The Eden Hermeneutic takes the initial aspect of God’s Creation and we hold to the truth that God made all things in this universe good, perfect, and holy. God perfectly designed the intricacies of everything we see around us, from flora and fauna to molecules and stars; God said it was “good.” God perfectly sculpted man from dust (Genesis 2:7) and perfectly made women from man’s rib cage (Genesis 2:22-23). On the sixth day of creation, God said it was “very good.”

Genesis 1:28 reads, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth.” God created sex. God’s first command to man and woman was “multiply.” One of the first conversations to exist in our universe was between Adam, Eve, and God; they talked about sex. The Eden Hermeneutic teaches us that everything in this world that God created was made good. There will be much to say about the warnings behind sex, sexuality, and sexual desire, but the reason we have those warnings is that Genesis chapter 3 happened. Sex was originally designed to fit within the God-ordained “good” like everything else in creation.

In Song of Solomon chapter 7:12, when the bride says to her husband, “Let us go out early to the vineyards…there I will give you my love,” we have to look at the act of sex (within the confines of marriage, and with God-honoring desire to be other-centric focused) as good. It is good to have sex within marriage. It is not gross. It is not dirty. It is good.

Sadly, we live in a world that is hyper-focused on sex. The sin that rules all of our hearts has taken the amazing, good gift of sex, and turned sex into something that God never intended it to be. We all know the dangers that are behind the topic of sex, but we must never forget that God made sex good and acceptable to His will for the universe.
