Delight in Protection
Pastor Ryan and Cathy Story
Song of Solomon chapter 3 is about the time many believe that the wedding between the bride and the bride groom is about to take place. In an amazing show of pomp the bridegroom, Solomon, sends a carriage and his personal guard to pick up his bride. Song of Solomon 3:7-8 reads, “Behold, it is the litter of Solomon! Around it are sixty mighty men, some of the mighty men of Israel, all of them wearing swords and expert in war, each with his sword at his thigh, against terror by night.” This could be looked at as an extreme act of possessive ownership and toxic masculinity that Solomon is isolating his bride from the world. Nowhere in Song of Solomon is that the case. The truth is that Solomon knew that his bride was worth protecting and put his best foot forward to ensure she was protected.
In marriage, both husband and wife need to protect the delight they have for one another. We talked extensively about foxes last week. This week as we talk about our delight in our spouse, we have to ensure we are sending “sixty mighty men” (metaphorically speaking) to ensure that delight in our marriage is protected. At times we may need to protect our spouses from themselves and the blind spot they may have. At times we may need to protect your marriage from the “tyranny of the urgent” and the “relentlessness of hurry” and we may have to have the “quality time” conversation. At times we may need to discuss what we say “yes” to because we are spending more time with in-laws or friends than our own families. If there is a delight in your marriage, then take a page out of Solomon’s book and send protection to ensure that delight is preserved and safe.
You might be reading this and thinking, “I have no or little delight in my marriage.” Sadly, at some point, the “sixty mighty men” were not sent out. There is always hope when there is Jesus. We are not defined by our past mistakes and have the opportunity to “fix” (with the leading of the Holy Spirit) the areas in our marriage that we have lost our delight in. The best way to begin to protect the delights of your marriage is to start sending out the troops. Start small. Discuss with your spouse and figure out the delight that is most missed. Begin to pray about how you can begin to enjoy that delight again. Protect your spouse from shame, protect your spouse from time, protect your spouse from themselves, and protect them from whatever forces may be bringing them down.
