Danger of Picking Your Corner
Pastor Ryan and Cathy Story

The other day my son said to me, “Mom, I made a new friend! We have something in common, so I think that means we are friends now.” In my mind I thought, exactly son, this is a true basic building block of having a friend. We find something we have in common with someone and we can build from there. While there are times we befriend others who may not share many, if any, similarities, sometimes that difference is exactly what draws people together. You are so opposite that their interests really intrigue you. You become drawn to doing something so out of the ordinary from your normal, it then becomes a common interest between you and this person!

In Song of Solomon, we see “others” responding throughout the book. These friends are encouraging, uplifting, and standing with their friends in love. The people they had picked to be in their corner were supportive of them and they could be found shouting encouragement! Who we pick to have in our corner supporting us matters! Proverbs 18:24 says, “A man of many companions may come to ruin, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.” As adults, many of us can talk about the importance of having that friend that sticks closer than a brother, or someone who you know is always there for you. Evaluating if our friendships are truly Christ-centered is still an important task.

If your corner is full of people, who are great friends, and love you immensely, but do not push you closer to Jesus, your corner may not be as great as you think. Proverbs 13:20 says, “Whoever walks with the wise becomes wise, but the companion of fools will suffer harm.” Picking your corner is not just about filling your corner with people of common interest, while important, your relationship with God is much more important. A friend is one who can and will speak truth into your life. Sometimes truth is hard, and sometimes the truth is unpleasant. A true friend will not forsake speaking the truth in love.

In the Song of Solomon, the words of their friends spurred them on in their love for one another. Their friends did not bring them down or tell them to question their love. Their friends are a source of blessing and life, not a distraction. Consider who you have put in your corner. Are there people who are enjoyable people, but do not push you closer to Jesus? You do not have to unfriend them, but maybe they are not the strongest basis of friendship. Are your friends pushing you closer to Christ and offering biblical wisdom? If you cannot find these people in your corner, maybe it is time to make some adjustments to create a more God-centered life!
