Interchangeable
Pastor Ryan and Cathy Story
Have you ever thought about how interchangeably we use words? We can say, “This pizza is awesome!” the same way we will say, “God is awesome!” You may say, “I love this food!” the same way you might say, “I love my spouse!” A book can be good, but that does not even come close to the goodness of our God. Clearly, no one would go about believing that you love food or books in the same way you love your spouse, children, or friends. Our words and actions work together to demonstrate what we say we feel.
Unfortunately, the world often wants to interchange priorities and passions in our lives. The passion and desire we should have for our spouse can seem interchangeable with the love we have for our children, or the requirements we have for a job. We can make sex, something that should be regarded as special and an incredible bonus to marriage, almost like a checklist item just like we do with assignments at work. The world wants to tell us that there just is no time for intimacy because that time is interchangeable with something else.
When you have a passion and desire for something, you talk about it. You share about it. It is like a spring overflowing out of your mouth. Matthew 12:34 reminds us, “For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.” The bride says in Song of Solomon 7:10, “I am my beloved’s, and his desire is for me.” Would your spouse be able to say that about you? Can you say that you feel that same way about your spouse? Is your desire for one another?
The world will tell you that time, energy, and even your spouse, are interchangeable, but that is not what God tells us. When we marry, we become one flesh. The Old Testament mentions several times how they would go into their tents and “become one.” We have to stop the lie that everything in life is interchangeable because some things just are not. Pizza places are interchangeable, and cars are interchangeable, but taking the time to show my spouse how important they are is not interchangeable. What flows out of your heart and mouth when it comes to your spouse? Are you excited to get home to them at the end of the day? Would others believe that your desire is for your spouse? Or does your desire seem to be for something else? Take time to consider if your spouse would be able to say Song of Solomon 7:10 in regards to your relationship. If you are not sure that your spouse could say that, what could you change in your relationship so that they can?
