Faithful

Revelation has often seemed to be a heavy and scary book from God’s Word. From the talk of the end of the world, great tribulation, final judgments, and ultimately death; it can be difficult to read and process. However, throughout these chapters and verses is the continued promise of salvation and eternity through and with Christ.
As Revelation opens, John writes Jesus’ words to seven specific churches. One of the first churches mentioned in Revelation chapter 2 is the church in Smyrna. Beginning in Revelation 2:8-10 Jesus says, “And to the angel of the church in Smyrna write: ‘The words of the first and the last, who died and came to life. ‘I know your tribulation and your poverty (but you are rich) and the slander of those who say that they are Jews and are not, but are a synagogue of Satan. Do not fear what you are about to suffer. Behold, the devil is about to throw some of you into prison, that you may be tested, and for ten days you will have tribulation. Be faithful unto death, and I will give you the crown of life.’’”
The opening sentence is truly so amazing, “The words of the first and the last, who died and came to life.” That is Jesus! At times we tend to just glaze over verses in Scripture because the “meat” or the “main point” is in a different spot in the passage. However, if we slow down and take time to prayerfully read over each word and verse, we can find another blessing. This passage is not simply a verse, but the words of Jesus!
Jesus goes on to warn the church of more tribulation and hardship to come. Yet, He encourages them to not fear. Although the hardships will come, Jesus tells them to endure and stay faithful to the Gospel of His death, burial, and resurrection. He goes on to say that through whatever comes their way, they shall receive the crown of life.
In this life, we have and will continue to face hardships and tribulations. However, as Jesus reminds and encourages the church of Smyrna, “Be faithful unto death.” I love how the writer of Hebrews says in Hebrews 10:23, “Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who promised is faithful.” As we go throughout our week, may we truly not fear, but hold fast to the promise of He who is. He is faithful. No matter what those around us and this world throw at us, as we stand strong we will receive the crown of life and eternity with our Risen Savior!
