Tasty
Angela Cox

“You are the salt of the earth, but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled under people’s feet.” Matthew 5:13

Salt is known to preserve certain types of foods. Good salt contains properties making preservation successful when there are no means of refrigeration or safe ways to store food. This would have been very helpful in the first century.

Salt, also, flavors food. Some of us even salt our meals before tasting to see if it needs any extra flavoring.

When we look at the context in Scripture of “you are the salt of the earth,” Jesus is saying we have the ability to preserve His Word! We are to “flavor” the world with His “food” (the Bible). What is interesting here can be the phrase, “But if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored?” Salt does not lose its flavor. It simply dissolves leaving its flavor behind. I think this parable is speaking more in the context of when we do not utilize His Word and share it with the world, then what good is it?

We have been called to love God and love His people (Matthew 22:37-40). When we “salt” the Earth we are speaking His goodness! I would like to think this parable is not necessarily only saying, “If you do not spread God’s Word then it is wasted.” All of Scripture is a good thing! God’s Word never goes bad! It never loses its power.

Therefore, when it says, “It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and tramples under people’s feet,” I believe it is Jesus saying, “I will not let any of it go to waste!” Take this Scripture and make it a positive. Jesus will use all of it for His good. Strive to be a light in a dark place. We need to salt the Earth with His goodness!
