Redeemer
Dr. Randy Johnson

I have been starting each of these devotions with a quote from one of our country’s founding fathers. In this devotion, I thought I would represent many of them by quoting the Supreme Court (1892). It said, “Our laws and our institutions must necessarily be based upon and embody the teachings of the Redeemer of mankind. It’s impossible that it should be otherwise; and to this extent our civilization and our institutions are emphatically Christian.” The Supreme Court acknowledged the necessity of our nation being Christian and referred to the Redeemer.

The title redeemer is used 29 times in the Bible. I love the title for Jesus. Job 19:25 says, “For I know that my Redeemer lives, and at the last he will stand upon the earth.” Psalm 19:14 adds, “Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in your sight, O Lord, my rock and my redeemer.” Psalm 78:35 continues, “They remembered that God was their rock, the Most High God their redeemer.” Jesus is the Redeemer and our founding fathers knew Him.

Did you know that our founding fathers acknowledged that all men are sinners? Our legal system has something called constitutional checks and balances. History.com describes this topic, “The system of checks and balances in government was developed to ensure that no one branch of government would become too powerful. The framers of the U.S. Constitution built a system that divides power between the three branches of the U.S. government—legislative, executive, and judicial—and includes various limits and controls on the powers of each branch.” They realized the heart of man and built-in an accountability aspect to keep everyone safe.

The Bible is clear about man’s condition. Psalm 106:6 says, “Both we and our fathers have sinned; we have committed iniquity; we have done wickedness.” Romans 3:10 adds, “As it is written: ‘None is righteous, no, not one.’” Romans 3:23 continues, “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” We are sinners, everyone one of us. Fortunately, there is a Redeemer named Jesus Christ who paved a way for us to be forgiven of our sins and placed in a relationship with God.
