Impossible
Dr. Randy Johnson

George Washington’s name is inseparable from America, and not only from the nation’s history. It identifies countless streets, buildings, mountains, bridges, monuments, cities, and people. Jesse Washington recorded for the Associated Press, “The 2000 U.S. Census counted 163,036 people with the surname Washington.”

George Washington (1732-1799) was an American military general, statesman, and founding father who was commander in chief of the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War (1775-83) and served two terms as the first president of the United States (1789 to 1797).

President Washington said, “It is impossible to govern the world without God and the Bible.” Merriam-Webster defines impossible as “incapable of being or of occurring.” He understood he needed God and the Bible. He understood the world needed God and the Bible. I appreciate his humility and openness.

God and the Bible are needed in our church, community, business, home, and daily life. I found it interesting that the early fathers believed everyone should have religious freedom.
The First Amendment text reads: “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.”

The Covid-19 virus brought a lot of this to the forefront. We were able to see how our country was founded with the concept of religious freedom. The premise was not to keep the church out of government but to keep the government from running the church.

The government needs Christians. Our appreciation and prayers need to include those in authority. We are challenged in 1 Timothy 2:1-2, “First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people, for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way.”
