Founded on the Gospel
Dr. Randy Johnson
Patrick Henry (1736-1799) was an American attorney, mayor of Virginia, and well-known for his declaration, “Give me liberty, or give me death!” As one of the founding fathers, he knew the basis for our country. I am moved by another statement he made, “It cannot be emphasized too strongly or too often that this great nation was founded, not by religionists, but by Christians not on religion, but on the gospel of Jesus Christ!”
Religion does not and can not save. Only the Gospel of Jesus Christ reconnects us to a relationship with God. Jesus saves! Patrick Henry was not ashamed of the Gospel of Christ or his beliefs as a Christian.
Please do not forget our Christian heritage. The history books are being rewritten ignoring the impact and influence of Jesus on changing lives. We need to help our country from losing focus on what God wants and relying on human wisdom, comfort, and pleasure.
I enjoy seeing how America’s legal concepts were drawn from Scripture. Our country was founded on the legal concept of the sovereign authority of God. It was not the sovereignty of the state or sovereignty of man. The ultimate power and decision maker was to come from God. In an employee grid chart, He was the one at the top. He was to be recognized as the Founder and CEO.
We see this displayed in several legal documents: The Mayflower Compact, The Declaration of Independence, The Constitution, and The Pledge of Allegiance. God is mentioned in the constitution of all 50 states. He is even recognized on our currency, “In God We Trust.”
Exodus 18:16 says, “When they have a dispute, they come to me and I decide between one person and another, and I make them know the statutes of God and his laws.” When people brought disputes to Moses, he looked to see what God had decreed and instructed. He gave godly advice. Exodus 20:3 sounds pretty basic, but its applications should run deep and wide, “You shall have no other gods before me.”
Finally, authorities need to know their source. Romans 13:1 says, “Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God.”
God is our Sovereign Authority and the United States was founded on the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
